Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe and the Golden Hurricane signed 22 student-athletes to national letters-of-intent on Wednesday, February 1, 2006
Tulsa, Okla. - University of Tulsa Head Football Coach Steve Kragthorpe announced today the signing of 22 student-athletes to national letters-of-intent, including 17 high school seniors and five junior college players.
Tulsa, winners of Conference USA and the 2005 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, had another solid class of recruits under Kragthorpe, his fourth recruiting class as the Hurricane head coach.
The junior college players are all on the offensive side of the ball, including three receivers, one tight end and one lineman. The Hurricane class includes six Oklahoma High School seniors and seven prep seniors from the state of Texas. Tulsa also dipped into the states of Florida, Tennessee, California, Louisiana, Missouri and South Carolina to complete its recruiting class.
"I really like the chemistry of this recruiting class," said Kragthorpe. "Much like our season in 2005 we have a group of guys that our not only committed to being good football players, but good people. This class has a great feel. It's a group of guys that will continue to help us grow and expand our opportunities on the football field.
"While our recruiting philosophy remains the same in terms of drawing a circle 300 miles around Tulsa, the national exposure we garnered by playing in and winning the Conference USA Football Championship Game and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl has allowed us to expand our recruiting territories in a very positive fashion. Combine that with the new hires on our coaching staff and the ties these coaches have has enabled us to sign some quality players from other geographic areas," added Kragthorpe.
Each side of the ball is equally represented with Tulsa's signing class, as there are 11 offensive players and 11 on the defense. Priorities for the Hurricane recruiting class included receiver and cornerback, as Tulsa inked five wide receivers, two tight ends and four cornerbacks.
The wide receivers include three junior college transfers -- Corey Kizer, Dion Toliver and Alonzo Wilson -- as well as high school receivers Stephen Polk from Dallas' Pinkston High School, and Blanchard (Okla.) High School's Daniel Morrell. Tulsa singed four high school cornerbacks including two from the state of Texas -- Dominique Crawford and Charles Davis -- as well as one from Missouri -- Kenny Sims -- and Oklahoma -- Jamad Williams, a Midwest City High School product.
"We addressed the needs that we determined we had at the wide receiver and defensive back positions, particularly at wide receiver. We feel we've added some immediate help by bringing in three junior college receivers, but at the same time we've been able to bolster our offensive and defensive lines," Kragthorpe said.
