Some of state's best season records for high school basketball can be found right here in Seminole County.

There are a few of the "not so good" records too.

Either way, for most schools in the county, the 2005-06 basketball regular season has come to an end.

Tuesday night's games signaled the last chance to get ready for the playoffs, for all the small schools in the county.

The three larger schools—Seminole, Konawa, and Wewoka—still have a week to go.

But even they are wrapping things up, looking at District Tournament brackets, and sizing up the opponents that really count—the ones in the playoffs.

Every team will get a chance, no matter what their regular season record looks like, because every team is in the playoffs… At least in the beginning.

Seminole County has seen records as impressive as 23-1 (New Lima Falconettes), while other teams have only won one or two games all season.

Whatever the case may be, now is the time to "shape up or ship out." The upcoming games will mean the end of a season for many teams, and the end of a career for most of the senior players.

But for a select few, the next few weeks could be the path to glory, the road to the coveted State Championship.

CLASS B SCHOOLS
Four high schools in Seminole County fit into the Class B category, and three of them share a district.

Bowlegs, Maud and Sasakwa are all in District 1 of Area IV, according to the brackets released recently by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).

Butner is in District 5 of Area III. For a few of these basketball teams, District Tournaments start as early as tonight.

Maud Public Schools is hosting the District 1 tournament, which begins with a matchup of the Sasakwa Lady Vikings versus the Moss Lady Pirates.

This, the very first of the playoff games involving county teams, will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

The Lady Vikings finished their regular season with an 11-12 record, losing four in a row at the end. The Moss girls are 11-11, according to www.coachesaid.com.

Also tonight at Maud, the Bowlegs Lady Bison will face the Maud Lady Tigers, at 8 p.m. The Lady Bison finished 14-8 on the regular season, and have already beaten the Maud girls once. Maud is currently 6-16.

The boys' teams from these schools will face off at Maud on Friday (tomorrow), beginning with Bowlegs versus Moss, at 6:30 p.m., and ending with Sasakwa versus Maud at 8 p.m.

Bowlegs' boys, at 1-20, are expected to be outmatched by Moss's Pirates, currently at 16-8. However, the Bison can be surprising if they put four good quarters in a row.

With a 14-8 record, the Maud Tigers are expected to beat the Sasakwa Vikings, who are 6-15 on the season. Maud won the matchup earlier in the season, but only by 12 points.

Winners of tonight's and tomorrow's games will play in the District 1 Championship on Friday, also at Maud.

In Area III, District 5, both Butner teams will play on Friday, the girls at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.

The Lady Eagles, who struggled to a 2-20 finish, will face Earlsboro's girls, who are 6-17 on the season. The winner will play Paden on Saturday.

Butner's boys will play Paden, to whom they lost in their season opener on November 1.

At 8-15, the Eagles have struggled, but Paden's boys are at 4-18 for the season. Whichever team wins will find a powerful opponent in Earlsboro on Saturday.

CLASS A SCHOOLS
Three of Seminole County's schools are Class A, but they're in three different areas and three different districts.

Varnum is Area II, District 8; Strother is Area III, District 4; and New Lima is Area IV, District 1.

Both New Lima teams got a bye for Friday's opening games, since they have two of the best records in the state—both the boys and the girls are ranked third in Class A.

The New Lima Falcons have a 22-2 record, while the girls are 23-1. Still, New Lima will be the host school for the District 1 playoffs; tomorrow's games feature Wetumka versus Weleetka, both boys and girls.

The winners of those games will face New Lima's teams on Saturday evening.

Varnum's boys also got a bye, for the District 8 tourney at Varnum. The 12-12 Lady Whippets will meet Macomb at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and if they win, will play Wayne on Saturday.

The 21-3 Whippets will play at 8 p.m. Saturday, against the winner of the boys' Wayne-Macomb game.

Another bye was handed out to Strother's Lady Yellowjackets, after they put up a 20-4 season; they'll play Saturday in Dewar, against the winner of the Kiefer-Dewar girls' games. The Yellowjackets, though, after finishing 7-15, will play Friday at 8 p.m. in Dewar, against the Dewar boys.

CLASS 2A SCHOOLS
Konawa and Wewoka both fall into Class 2A's Area IV, which will begin playoffs next weekend.

The Wewoka Tigers won nine straight games to begin their season, before losing to Verdigris in overtime in the Bethel CD Warehouse Tournament Championship. Since then, they've won eight in a row—they currently have a 17-1 record and are ranked second in Class 2A. With two more regular season games to go, the Tigers hope to enter the playoffs 19-1, but nothing is guaranteed.

Their first playoff game is set for 8 p.m. February 18 (Saturday), versus Vanoss, in Vanoss. Win or lose, the Tigers will advance to regionals at Konawa.

The Lady Tigers have had their ups and downs, but still carry a winning record (10-8). After two more regular season games, they'll also travel to Vanoss, where they will face the Vanoss girls at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 18. Konawa's teams have had a little more trouble this season, more than expected.

The Lady Tigers, after making it to State last season, hold a 10-10 record this year. They have one more home game before they travel to Colbert for district playoffs. Konawa's girls will face Colbert's girls at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.

The Konawa boys' team is in slightly better shape, with a record of 12-8, and has one more home game to go. Their district tournament game is set for 8 p.m. Feb. 17, against Colbert, at Colbert. Both Konawa teams will advance to regionals, win or lose. Konawa will host the Regional Tournament.

CLASS 4A
Only Seminole High School is in Class 4A, of all the county's schools. The Chiefs and Lady Chieftains are in Area I, District 6, this season, which means they'll face Byng in the opening rounds of the playoffs.

Seminole's boys currently hold an 11-9 record, and have two more regular season games to go before heading to the District Tournament. No matter the outcome of Friday's and Tuesday's games, they'll finish at .500 or better.

Next Saturday (Feb. 18), they'll travel to Byng for the District Tournament, set to play at 8 p.m. The Lady Chiefs are 6-13 on the season, and will play Byng at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 18.

Both Seminole teams beat Byng in Seminole at their last meeting, on Jan. 31. The boys won, 49-45, and the girls won 49-39. Still, both Byng and Seminole will advance to the Regional Tournament, which will be held at Tuttle and Byng.
