Some of state's best season records for high school basketball can be found right here in Seminole County.
There are a few of the "not so good" records too.
Either way, for most schools in the county, the 2005-06 basketball regular season has come to an end.
Tuesday night's games signaled the last chance to get ready for the playoffs, for all the small schools in the county.
The three larger schools—Seminole, Konawa, and Wewoka—still have a week to go.
But even they are wrapping things up, looking at District Tournament brackets, and sizing up the opponents that really count—the ones in the playoffs.
Every team will get a chance, no matter what their regular season record looks like, because every team is in the playoffs… At least in the beginning.
Seminole County has seen records as impressive as 23-1 (New Lima Falconettes), while other teams have only won one or two games all season.
Whatever the case may be, now is the time to "shape up or ship out." The upcoming games will mean the end of a season for many teams, and the end of a career for most of the senior players.
But for a select few, the next few weeks could be the path to glory, the road to the coveted State Championship.
CLASS 2A SCHOOLS
Konawa and Wewoka both fall into Class 2A's Area IV, which will begin playoffs next weekend.
The Wewoka Tigers won nine straight games to begin their season, before losing to Verdigris in overtime in the Bethel CD Warehouse Tournament Championship. Since then, they've won eight in a row—they currently have a 17-1 record and are ranked second in Class 2A. With two more regular season games to go, the Tigers hope to enter the playoffs 19-1, but nothing is guaranteed.
Their first playoff game is set for 8 p.m. February 18 (Saturday), versus Vanoss, in Vanoss. Win or lose, the Tigers will advance to regionals at Konawa.
The Lady Tigers have had their ups and downs, but still carry a winning record (10-8). After two more regular season games, they'll also travel to Vanoss, where they will face the Vanoss girls at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 18. Konawa's teams have had a little more trouble this season, more than expected.
The Lady Tigers, after making it to State last season, hold a 10-10 record this year. They have one more home game before they travel to Colbert for district playoffs. Konawa's girls will face Colbert's girls at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.
The Konawa boys' team is in slightly better shape, with a record of 12-8, and has one more home game to go. Their district tournament game is set for 8 p.m. Feb. 17, against Colbert, at Colbert. Both Konawa teams will advance to regionals, win or lose. Konawa will host the Regional Tournament.
