Having a hometown hero in a town the size of Foyil — population about 250 — is a big deal. For that hero to be Seattle Seahawks kicker Josh Brown whose team will play in Super Bowl XL Sunday makes it a town event. Even the school district is holding a watch party.
Most folks in Foyil either know, have known or know someone who knows Brown, and they speak good things of him and his accomplishments.
Former Foyil Panther football player Jason Pendergraft played alongside Brown during their high school years. Pendergraft said Brown is a real team player and is excited to see his former teammate on pro sports’ biggest stage.
“I think it’s neat because he always mentions Foyil, and he’s not real conceited,” Pendergraft said Friday. “He always talked about how the whole team got him there, not just himself.”
Mary Sanders is a teacher at Foyil High School who said Brown was entertaining.
“In algebra, he was a class clown,” she said. “I’m proud as punch of him. He’s a great guy who has lots of personality. I’m proud he has put Foyil on the map.”
Brown often dines at the Top Hat Dairy Bar in Foyil and owner Doug Chaney can’t wait for him to return.
“I think it’s great and fantastic that he’s going to the Super Bowl,” Chaney said. “He’s real good friends with my wife and his dad and him eat here when he’s in town. I can’t wait until it’s over and he comes back to this area.”
Although most people in Foyil know Brown, those who don’t still have the excitement and pride.
“It’s cool that he’s going and a lot of people are excited,” waitress Shannon Erwin said. “He’s a nice guy — a big celebrity around here and people love him.”
