Stillwell Indians (1990)
Sapulpa Chieftains (-2005)
Former Tahlequah Tiger (http://www.tahlequahtigers.com) and Northeastern Redmen (http://www.nsuoksports.com/) center Tuffy Thornton has been selected as the new head football coach for the Tahlequah Tiger football program, it was announced Friday afternoon by THS athletic director Randy Underwood. Thornton's hiring is subject to approval of the Tahlequah School Board.
Thornton, a 1985 graduate of THS and a 1990 NSU grad, beat out his former coach - legendary Hall of Famer Charlie Cooper - for the Tiger coaching position. Cooper, who had been out of coaching since retiring from both Tahlequah and Rogers, Ark., was the only other finalist besides Thornton.
Thornton had been serving as the offensive coordinator at Sapulpa and helped in the rebuilding process at Tulsa East Central before moving to coach the Chieftains. He has coached for 16 seasons after his graduation from NSU and this will be his first head coaching position.
He takes over a program that has won two games in the past two seasons and must play in the toughest 6A district in the state with Jenks, Muskogee, along with his former school and Tulsa Washington - both who replaced Broken Arrow and Tulsa Memorial in the newest redistricting this past fall.
