OBA boys draw tough opener at state

Oklahoma Bible Academy’s boys drew Wewoka, last year’s state runner-up, as their first-round opponent for the Class 2A state tournament, which tips off Thursday at Midwest City Carl Albert High School.
The Trojans (24-2) and Wewoka will play at 8:30 p.m. OBA beat Rush Springs 55-48 in the Area II finals at Cushing Friday to qualify for state.
The Tigers were ranked No. 2 in the final 2A Coaches Aid rankings but were upset by Latta 57-56 in the regional winners bracket finals.
Wewoka came back to defeat Panama, 75-66; Konawa, 83-67; and Latta, 79-48 in the Area IV tournament at McAlester.
“It does make you a little worried because they were seeded No. 2 or No. 3 in the state most of the year,” said OBA coach Devon Schafer. “That’s where they belong.”
The Tigers are led by twin brothers Virgil and Mitchell Tilley, who form one of the state’s top backcourts. The Tilleys have led Wewoka to four straight state tournaments, including two runner-up finishes.
“I don’t think anyone matches up with Wewoka,” Schafer said. “They are a unique team with all the speed and athleticism that they have. They have some size inside. They are full of good players.”
The Trojans are making their first trip to the state tournament since 1992.
“It would be easy for a team like us, who hasn’t been there before, just to be glad to make it,” Schafer said.
However, Schafer said the Trojans have higher goals.
“I was asking our guys this summer what their goals were, and they acted like even back then that their goal was beyond making the state tournament,” Schafer said. “They want to compete for a state title.”
OBA’s only losses have been to class A state quarterfinalist Pioneer and Oklahoma Christian School, the 2A tournament’s No. 1 seed.
“Our guys have stepped up and taken care of business,” Schafer said. “One thing that has been good for us is that you can’t key on one guy. I hope that continues through state.”

8:30 OCS (24-1) vs Crescent (19-9)
