This is from coaches aid for who people that haven't seen it.
If it felt like something - or someone - was missing from last year's 2A state championship game, it was only natural. For the first time since anyone can remember, Dale and/or Latta wasn't playing on the season's final day.
That would be like having the 6A football finals without Jenks or Union.
After a run of dominance for more than a decade, neither of the perennial powers was in uniform for the final game of the season, which Silo won over Oktaha. That must have not set too well, especially in Dale, where the Pirates played with a proverbial chip on their shoulder throughout the fall state tournament to run roughshod over all the competition, including an Oktaha squad that ended the reign last spring.
The Pirates are extremely versatile with a stellar pitching trio, all of which picked up a pitching victories in last fall’s state tournament. Trace Dilliner (pictured top left) is the club’s ace with a 9-1 record and 1.29 ERA. Fellow senior Dustin Sanders chips in an 8-1 mark and 1.60 ERA while Michael Harris contributes a 7-1 record and 2.20 earned run average.
While pitching has been outstanding, the Pirates’ strongest point might just be their offense, highlighted by Dilliner, who batted .390 with a whopping 18 home runs and 41 RBI last fall. Senior catcher Ty Flewallen is a .420 hitter with eight homers and 30 runs batted in. Shortstop Tyler Holton contributes terrific defense and a .380 offensive clip and six homers.
Oktaha has a wealth of experience and hunger to take the final step after finishing as state runner-up each of the past two seasons.
The Tigers are led by sensational junior Cale Elam (pictured top right), who has been one of the best pitchers in any classification, coming off an 8-1 campaign with a 0.91 ERA and 109 strikeouts. Sophomores Daniel Hayes and Cameron Proctor have become key marksmen as well. Last season, Hayes went 5-1 with a 1.23 ERA while Proctor was 6-2 with a 1.91 earned run average.
Offensively, Elam tops the attack with a .461 average, five home runs and 46 runs batted in while Hayes checks in at 419 with 28 RBI and 54 runs scored.
Last year’s spring state titlist Silo saw its fall come to a premature end with a regional tournament finish, but you can expect long-time head coach Billy Jack Bowen to have the Rebels right back in the thick of the title race.
Junior southpaw Logan Oller headlines the pitching staff with an 8-1 record and 1.36 ERA and is coming off a phenomenal performance in last year’s state tournament. Catcher Trevor Bowen tops the offensive assault with a .531 average, 12 homers and 65 runs batted in.
Tushka showed its prowess last fall, stunning Silo to win the regional and reach the state tournament and has a tremendous cast to work with. Senior Andrew Pruit is the catalyst for the Tigers, coming off a season in which he batted a team-best .457 with 46 RBI while also posting a 5-2 record on the pitching mound, including a 2.45 ERA and 45 strikeouts. Kody Moreland chips in an 8-1 record and 3.23 pitching mark as well.
Tushka's offensive firepower in the heart of the order is keyed by Trevor Begley, who hits .361, 12 homers and 32 runs batted in.
Rebuilding continues at Latta with a young squad that got the Panthers right back in the state tournament mix last fall and has high aspirations again. Juniors Wacey Henderson (.402 avg) and Seth Roebuck (.421 avg) are the team’s offensive catalysts along with sophomore Dylan Tinkler (.388 avg). Tyler Reeves finished 6-4 to top the mound crew a season ago.
Carrying the flag of football playing schools that have not won a baseball title in any of the three smallest classes since 1992 are Drumright and Lincoln Christian.
Drumright may have the best chance at ending that lengthy drought, welcoming back eight starters for Coach S. Blake Flewallen. Seniors Jacob Vogt (.527 avg), Josh Gutierrez (.565 avg) and Levi Fulkerson (.511 avg) are also back with blistering offensive numbers. Vogt, a southpaw, is the pitching workhorse with an 11-1 record and 1.43 ERA while Gutierrez adds a 9-2 mark and 2.11 earned run average.
Lincoln Christian has an athletic nucleus that has caught the attention of many coaches in 2A as a possible big contender once the playoffs roll around.
After Tushka got the ball rolling last fall, it was Wright City that put the proverbial knockout blow on Silo in regional action, reaching the state tournament behind standout lefty Kyle Baker, who finished 5-4 with a 1.99 ERA. Freshman Berry Williams was 8-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his first high school campaign.
At the plate, Baker tops the attack with a .420 average and seven homers while junior Destin Moore chips in a .412 mark and four home runs.
Mangum narrowly missed out on a trip to the state tournament last spring and with eight returning starters looks to be a top challenger to take that next step this time around. Senior Kelby Wendt and his .543 batting average lead the charge while Kyle Ellis adds a 6-4 pitching record and 2.07 ERA to add a nice compliment to Aron Kendall’s 8-4 record and 2.04 earned run average.
Cordell is another western squad with plenty of experience, welcoming back seven starters from a 22-win club. Tyler Overton is the ringleader with a .541 batting average, 13 extra base hits and 32 RBI along with a 7-2 pitching mark, 1.65 ERA and 58 strikeouts.
