Henderson wins 5A state wrestling championship

OKLAHOMA CITY - Tahlequah Junior Kelly Henderson scored a reversal in the final six seconds of his title match to capture the Class 5A State Championship by a score of 3-2 Saturday night at the OKC Fairgrounds.

Henderson trailed Jeff Slaughter of Stillwater 2-1 when “Mad Dog” came up with his dramatic reversal, good for two points and the win.

Henderson reached the title match with a 15-2 win in the Semi-Finals on Friday night. Last week Henderson knocked off No. 1-ranked Corby Ray of Sapulpa on Ray’s home mat to earn the number one seed from the east in the State Championship Tournament.

Kelly is Tahlequah’s first state champion in wrestling since Alex Hendricks in 1998 and is the only 145 pound Tahlequah wrestler to claim the state title. Henderson is coached by Johnny Deaton.
