Losers Bracket
Wewoka 79, Latta 48
Tilley, who had 45 points in Friday’s win over Konawa, had another big game Saturday, but the story of the contest might have been the Wewoka defense (which forced 25 turnovers) and the performance of Griffis, who hit five of the Tigers’ seven 3-pointers in the game.
Latta (16-12) trailed just 15-13 after one quarter, but Wewoka outscored the Panthers 27-8 in the second period to take control of the game.
“They (the Tigers) had payback on their mind, and we couldn’t handle their pressure this time around,” Latta coach Donnie Husband said. “They turned up their defensive pressure, and the freshman shot the ball really well, and we just weren’t able to stay with them this time around. The way it ended up was kind of a microcosm of our season.”
Brian Perry (19 points) and Virgil Tilley (11) joined Mitchell Tilley and Griffis in double figures for the Tigers, who were the 2005 Class 2A runner-up and improved to 24-2 with Saturday’s victory.
Kolbie Brown and Trevan Jimboy had 15 points apiece for Latta, while Isaac Vandever — like Brown playing his final basketball game in a Latta uniform — added eight points and eight rebounds.
“Kolbie and Isaac have meant a lot to our basketball program,” Husband said. “We’re going to miss their contributions and what they gave to us.”
Coalgate 43, Konawa 34 (girls)
Walker, who has averaged about 25 points per game in the playoffs, had her highest rebounding total of the postseason to pace Coalgate to a 28-20 advantage on the boards in the elimination contest, and the Lady Wildcats forced 26 turnovers in beating the Lady Tigers for the third time since Feb. 14 and for the second time in the playoffs.
Konawa led for most of the first half before Coalgate — 25-2 and ranked sixth in 2A — eventually rallied to take a 22-20 lead at intermission, then the Lady Wildcats held the Lady Tigers to just one field goal and three points in the third quarter and carried a 31-23 lead to the final period. Coalgate, which was 14-for-20 from the line, hit key free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
“We started out slow — kind of like a team that had lost an emotional game the night before,” said first-year Coalgate coach Jim Jenson, whose club was beaten, 58-52, by third-ranked Pocola in Friday night’s area championship game. “We kind of gained some momentum in the second quarter and got the lead right befort halftime.
“We played great defense in the third quarter,” he added. “I thought the difference in the game was the way we played coming out of the locker room in the third quarter. “
Lauren Sandmann (one of two senior starters for Coalgate) had her best game of the playoffs with nine points, seven assists and four steals, and Jordan Helton (who scored three points) and point guard Teran Mixon (who was held scoreless for the first time this season) combined for nine steals (five by Helton).
Rehea Grant capped an outstanding postseason with 14 points to lead Konawa, and senior Rachael Cole was also in double figures with 10 points in her final game for the Lady Tigers.
With the victory, Coalgate moved on to a meeting with Hinton at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Midwest City. Konawa, which earned a state tournament bid in 2005 (coach Gordon Garner’s first season at the school) finished the season 16-12.
“It was tough to to have to beat (Konawa) three times in three weeks to get to the state tournament,” Jenson said. “We’re just glad to be there.”
