NEWKIRK STAR ATHLETE - Kryston Griffin, center front, signs the paperwork to play college softball at Northern-Tonkawa. She's joined by her mom, Tammy Griffin (seated left); NOC Head Coach Karie Linsenmeyer (seated right); and in back (left to right) NHS Principal/Head Girls' Basketball Coach Dwight Winburn; NHS Assistant Softball Coach Kim Finuf; Kryston's dad, Mike Griffin; and NHS Head Softball Coach Brad Larimer.

NEWKIRK - A first impression became a lasting one for Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Head Softball Coach Karie Linsenmeyer. On the recruiting trail, Linsenmeyer crossed paths with Newkirk's Kryston Griffin only by happenstance, but the coach was so delighted by what she observed, she decided to keep tabs on Griffin, and the chance encounter eventually led to Griffin's future softball destination.

It became official on Tuesday, January 25 when Griffin signed a letter of intent to play for the two-year school in a ceremony in front of her friends, family, and coaches in the Board of Education room at Newkirk High School. For Griffin, it was the first stage in her transition to the next level, going from the three sports she plays in high school to the one in which she will participate in college, though she is still determined to add to her list of basketball and track and field exploits at NHS.

"I'm really excited about it and excited about the softball program," explained Griffin of her choice to continue her softball career at NOC and become a Lady Maverick. "I'm kind of nervous, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm excited that all my friends and my coaches and my family came to support me."
