LAWTON - Garrette Mantle resigned Thursday as men's basketball coach at Cameron University.
Assistant coach Maury Leitzke will take over during the offseason while the university undertakes a nationwide search for his replacement.
Mantle, the nephew of baseball great Mickey Mantle, was 71-114 in seven seasons at the Division II school, including a 12-15 mark this season. He guided the Aggies to a 15-12 finish in 2004-05, their only winning season in his tenure.
But after an 11-7 start, his Aggies lost eight of their last nine games this season, with an average margin of 4.5 points. They finished 2-10 in the Lone Star Conference, which Mantle called "the most competitive NCAA Division II conference in the nation." Two of the losses came in overtime, one was in double overtime and three others were by four points or less.
Mantle came to Cameron after two years each at Edmond North High School and Lawton High School. Before that, he was an assistant at Southeastern Oklahoma State, his alma mater.

LAWTON, Oklahoma (Feb. 23) - Cameron University men’s basketball coach Garrette Mantle resigned Thursday, school officials announced. Assistant coach Maury Leitzke will assume operational duties with the program as a nationwide search to fill the coaching vacancy begins immediately.
"It has been a pleasure to coach at this level and to coach in what I feel is the most competitive NCAA Division II conference in the nation in the Lone Star Conference," Mantle said. "I’ve had great experiences not only with the kids who have come through our program and graduated from Cameron University, but also with the many outstanding coaches in this conference who I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and grow professionally by coaching against them."
Mantle completed his seventh season at the helm of the Aggie program this week. He compiled a record of 71-114 (.384), including leading the team to its first winning season since 1998, last year. Over the last two seasons, Mantle’s squads posted a 27-27 mark.
"We are very appreciative of Coach Mantle’s dedication and efforts during his tenure as head basketball coach at Cameron University," Athletic Director Jim Jackson said. "During his seven years at Cameron he has impacted the lives of countless students in a positive manner and we wish him well in his future endeavors."
Cameron concluded the 2005-06 season on Wednesday, dropping an 82-80 overtime decision to Texas A&M-Commerce. The Aggies finished with an overall record of 12-15, including 2-10 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. Cameron lost eight of its last nine games by a combined 34 points, an average of just 4.25 points per game.
