OBA hopeful about regional
CNHI News Service — By Bruce Campbell, Staff Writer

Lenny Juliano may be stepping up at the right time for the No. 4-ranked Oklahoma Bible Academy boys, who will be facing Hooker at 8 p.m. Thursday in a Class 2A regional semifinal at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Juliano has had his second and third (23 points against Cimarron Jan. 31 and 22 against Hennessey Friday in the district finals) highest scoring games of the season in recent weeks.

“His biggest part has been going to the offensive boards,’’ said Trojans coach Devon Schafer. “Most people don’t think of him as that, but he’s our leading rebounder.

“We have six seniors (Travis Mendel, Brett Koehn, Juliano, Zac Hake, Blake Thomas and Larin Wiens) on the team and we expect all of them to step up a little bit. They all have lately. I’m pleased with that.’’

Mendel had 13 points in the 59-30 win over Hennessey. Wiens had 11, the 15th straight game he’s been in double figures.

OBA, 20-2, has won 18 of their last 19 games.

Hooker beat Sayre 60-59 in its district final.

The Bulldogs, Schafer said, are probably a little deeper than the Trojans, playing eight to nine players on a regular basis. Neither team will have a size advantage.

“They can score from a lot of different positions,’’ Schafer said. “We’re going to have to play some good defense and take care of the ball. They like to press a little bit and put some pressure on the ball. We have to limit our turnovers.’’

If the Trojans win, they will play the winner between No. 12 Crescent and Minco at 8 p.m. Saturday at Clinton. If they lose, the Trojans would play the Tonkawa-Hinton loser at 8 p.m. Friday at Clinton.

OBA’s girls, 21-1 and ranked No. 5, will play Hooker at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs beat Sayre 31-28 in their district. OBA is coming off a 59-37 win over Hennessey.

“We match up pretty well with them,’’ said Lady Trojan coach Mark Shuck. “They’re not very big so they should have some trouble defending our size. They have four athletic guards who shoot the ball well and hand the ball well. They have two good posts, but they are a little undersize.’’

The key, Shuck said, will be playing consistent.

“We need to get good possessions each trip,’’ Shuck said. “In our case, we need to force people into bad shots.’’

The Lady Trojans had three players in double figures against Hennessey — Faith Garrard (14), Jordan Williams (13) and Bridget Shuck (12). That was the first time in seven games, OBA had three players in double figures.

“Everybody contributed,’’ Shuck said. “We passed the ball well. We had good team concepts. I was real pleased with that.’’

OBA, with a victory, would have a difficult regional final; No. 10-ranked Crescent hosts No. 9 Hinton in the other regional semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The two winners play at 8 p.m. Saturday at Clinton.

If OBA loses, the Lady Trojans would play the Minco-Tonkawa winner at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Clinton.

“Crescent has been playing exceptionally well and so has Hinton,’’ Shuck said. “Preston and Dale are tough on the other side (of the area bracket). We’re going to have some tough mountains to climb.’’
