CHEROKEE - Brian Stalder and his Beaver High School boys basketball team have a plan for this year’s playoffs.
It’s called Plan A.
And so far through crazy post-season race, it is working out nicely.
The Dusters captured the Regional title here Saturday night with a 55-40 pasting of second-ranked Pioneer. The victory moved Beaver to 24-1 overall and into the Class A-1 Area Finals this Friday night in Enid. BHS will race the Agra Bearcats, who downed Laverne 50-49 Monday evening.
“This is plan A,” Stalder said. “We experienced plan B last year, and it can work out. However, it is a lot harder with more games. We’ve been pleased so far this year being able to stick to plan A.”
In Saturday’s Regional final with Pioneer, the Dusters found themselves down by as many as seven in the opening quarter. However, BHS found its offensive rhythm in the second quarter and led 29-28 at halftime.
In the second half, however, it was all Beaver as the Dusters clamped down on the Mustang offense, allowing just 12 points in the entire final 16 minutes of the contest.
“I thought our defensive effort was good the whole way through,” Stalder said. “There was a short stretch at the end of the first when we could have defended better. We went in at halftime and talked about defending harder and showing more patience on offense. In the third quarter, we let ourselves get open shots and made a run. The difference was those first three or four minutes of the third.”
Duster junior Josh Malone led the offensive charge with 15 points, while senior Chuck Salsibury scored 13 points. He also added eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior Wade Payne was also in double figures with 10 points. Juniors Garrett Nichols and Tye Richerson (10 rebounds) added six and five points, while senior Gus van Fredenberg scored four. Junior Ivan Nevarez added a pair.
Perhaps the biggest factor in the game was the Dusters’ shape. During stops in the game, Pioneer’s players were obviously winded, grabbing at their knees. “I think our kids are in good shape,” Stalder said. “It’s not hard to be in that kind of shape when you work as hard as they do in practice. But, sometimes the size of the rim is like a teacup. And that is what happened to them in the second half. The game could have went either way.”
In the Regional opener Thursday in the Duster Dome, Beaver battled Texhoma in a 52-38 victory. BHS led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter but BHS outscored the Red Devils 22-11 in the second. “I thought we made a good run in the second quarter,” Stalder said. “And we played well defensively in every quarter. We made one good sport offensively and held on for a win.”
Salisbury scored 22 points in the game on a 9-for-15 shooting performance and added five rebounds, five assists and eight steals. Richerson scored 11, while Malone added 10. Payne and van Fredenberg also scored six and three points, respectively.
