After 10 straight years of dominance in Class 2A -- and really it's more like 20 years -- everyone else must feel like Dale and Latta have worn out their welcome at the top.
And both will be very good again in 2008.
Many thought last year was finally the chance for the rest of the class to overtake the dynamic duo. And with the spark of two sensational senior southpaws (Washington's Zach Cargill and Wynnewood's Duane Betts), they had their chance. Dale still captured the gold, extending the string of Dale-Latta state titles to 16 times in the last 19 years.
Preseason Rankings
1. DALE
2. Silo
3. Central Sallisaw
4. Latta
5. Oktaha
6. Tushka
7. Wynnewood
8. Pocola
9. Hennessey
10. Cordell
11. Lincoln Christian
12. Gore
13. Mounds
14. Coalgate
15. Stroud
The defending champ Pirates are still the solid pick to win it all, despite having last fall's state champ Silo breathing down its neck with one of the most explosive lineups to come down the pike in a while.
Dale is sparked by a host of quality arms on the mound in addition to the big bats of Trevor Nelson, Trace Dilliner and Dillon Streber. All batted over .400 last fall with Nelson's .490 mark, seven home runs and 40 RBI one of the best marks the state.
Silo has a wealth of offense, as shown last fall, topped by senior infielder Brandon Wells and his team-high .512 average, 12 homers and 50 runs batted in. Toss in the power bats of Logan Oller, Cody Stephens and Trevor Bowen and you have all the makings of a powerhouse lineup.
Central Sallisaw has built up a consistent contender over the past couple of seasons and have one of the top hurlers anywhere in the state in Joey Veguilla, who posted an 8-0 record, 1.34 ERA and 115 stikeouts.
Sophomore Jose Olazagasti had a breakout freshman season and should be even better after hitting .417 with six homers and 31 RBI last season.
Perennial power Latta, topped by standout Dalton Brown, and Oktaha, sparked by multi-talented sophomore Cale Elam, round out the early top five.
