Took a tour South to look at the #1 team in Girls 2A. Konawa hosted districts with Vanoss.
Konawa plays man D and is up in your face 95% of the time. They like to press the entire game and will half court press on slobs.
On offense, they run Flex & Circle as the two main offensive sets. They have decent execution and see the floor well. Girls will try to find the open man on different options, but are not afraid to drive into the lane to draw the foul.
This was not too evident in the first half. Start of playoffs had the adrenaline pumping and they had several missed shots from the field. 50% of the first half points can from the foul line.
Vanoss came within 5 in the first half, but quit playing in the 3rd. Konawa had taken a 14+ lead and three point shots were not following for Vanoss. Left with 2 minutes remaining, score was 65 to 32, Konawa.
They play aggressive defense and use their speed to create turnovers on the press. Never saw a zone defense, always in match up.
They reverse the ball well and distribute the scoring – this works well in their favor. I was not entirely impressed overall with Konawa. I believe the undefeated record has helped save the #1 ranking. Have a very good bench and could possible go 5 deep for starters in foul trouble.
Any team with good guard speed and will work an inside-out game will have success against the Lady Tigers. Let the games begin. . . .!
