Let's put it this way. If he stays it would be a miracle. There has been more non-sense go on the past few months. Somebody is about to get IMO a very talented coach, and possibly staff!! Unless Coach gives it up and goes into preaching full-time,
Just one incredibly silly incident: We had an EMERGENCY School Board Meeting to keep our trainers from being able to walk in homecoming!!! Even though in the past the trainers had been allowed to walk in homecoming and it was in our school policy, they made this change TO OUR HANDBOOK. Not to mention all the chaos and other ignorant stuff that went on between people in our community over something this ignorant. (Never mind our ACT scores and what not are incredibly low!!! When are we going to have an emergency meeting over that!!!) Incredibly silly incident #2: They tried to eliminate our volunteer coaches from helping!! How many programs in the state have volunteer coaches for goodness sakes!!!! They put this on the board agenda!!! I was at, and will be at, all these board meetings. It is a farce. Last incredibly silly incident (and then I will say no more): One of our "new" assistant coaches who had coached softball and basketball told me he was reassigned/released from his coaching duties on the 1st day of school!!! He had been offered other jobs and turned them down!! He even asked the admin. if he was going to still be coaching!!! He told me he would have been totally out of coaching had dub not went to the school board and admin. and got him on the football staff.
Also, this past summer there was some very SHADY goings on with some people in our school. Concerning class scheduling, coaching/teaching assignments, and our past bball coach would run kids off and then blame our football coaches for kids quitting. RIDICULOUS!!! No more griping for now. sorry:rolleyes:
Anyways, it's just petty small-town crap, and IMO, I honestly believe our administration and school board are jealous, because our coaching staff is about the only group that truly cares about are kids. The others seem to be just drawing a pay-check!!! The parents and community see this, and the kids know it. The admin. and certain coaches feel threatened by how much our kids love our coaching staff. The school-board hates dub because he does what is right for kids, and plays the best kids, and doesn't let politics or cow down and let the board make the decisions for him. The vast majority of our town loves him, but the sad thing is, is the vast majority is also the silent majority that keeps quiet.
You can bet if given a chance our town will be heard. Even if it takes a couple of school board elections to get it done and we have to change admin's. The "silent" majority will be heard. If we do in fact lose dub our town will learn a lesson from this. 'nuff said:thumbsup:

It's like divorce. Both sides are at odds. Neither is willing to work to common ground.
Who suffers the most: The kids.
As adults, we must look toward the ultimate goal about education. Our kids & their future. It's easy to get bogged down in details and start to think about yourself (Admin, parents, individuals, etc.). We lose sight of what is really important in life - our kids.
I'm partial to coaches & sports. The discipline that kids have to endure & learn is paramount to thriving in a world that is stacked against them. Every adult knows anything worth while takes hard work to achieve. That's what I love about sports. Nothing is given to you - you have to earn it and work your butt off to have that opportunity.
Sometimes, administrations lose sight of that point. Everything is about money. You have to maximize what you have within your budget. Attacking sports programs may be one "quick" fix, but ultimately your kids are the ones who suffer. So, the community suffers and no one wins.
Your voices and concerns must be made public. Through civil communication with administration & parents, you make your point public & heard. If it's genuine and from the heart, your opinion will be respected. That's the very best you can do for your community & kids.
I truly believe in the old saying "The cream always comes to the top". Let's hope administrators believe that same way. . .

You are absolutely right elk. The kids are the most important thing. It seems everytime we get a Coach in our Football program that truly cares about the kids the school system always messes it up. Look at our history, Bacon, kids loved him, admin. ran him off, Chalenburg, kids loved him, same thing, in the past Hatabaugh, (who we played for),we would have ran through a wall for him!!! Same thing. It is a sad situation. Our community absolutely loves Football, but the lack of stability we are allowed to have here for whatever reason has hampered our ability to truly step out and be a state chamionship contender, and it looks like it always will at this point.
But you're right, the kids are at the center of this, and the most important thing. They are truly hurting right now for our coaches. They truly love and respect these guys, but they see it too. What makes me wonder is what is going to happen when they are no longer around. There would be ZERO discipline in our school if it weren't for the Football staff, they have taught these kids to have character. May our next coach be a very special person, he will need to be.:o

I agree with you Razorback fan, about Dubs, and Austin's, and all the coaches on staff's impact on the kids at Panama. These guys are truely part of the brotherhood, and I love em' like brothers.
As coaches', all we can hope to be said about us after we are gone(and we will almost always eventually be going somewhere) is that we did it right. We didn't play the petty games with these young men's lives, we strived to make a difference, and we left the place better off than how we found it.
If they end up moving on, Dubs' crew can answer all these with a resounding yes.
Much Love Peace Out, Travis

I think they really have a chance to WIN this coming season. They are getting better.Have good numbers(High 40's low 50's)and they are moving from Class 2A to A and with no dis respect that Class A District isn't one of the toughest.Plus they have been playing Seq Tahlequah,Keys etc and now they are in the District with Commerece,Foyil,Afton etc.

Why is Sallisaw open was it not open last year
Why is Salina open to start with? The coach there was doing a good job, had the kids coming out. Before he got there they had around 20 somthing coming out now they have over 40 players. The kids he had this year where young and in a pretty tough district in 2-A not the toughest but with Tal. Seq. Keys and colcord it is tough to win when they have already been lossing before you get there. Why did they not reward their coach that they had and let him stay to reap the harvest of his hard work that was going to come next year? He had worked hard, got the program going in the right direction, and did it right. I dont know if I would want to be in a program that not only does a good coach but a good person this way. I don't speak with out some knowledge of the situation. I saw these guys at team camp this summer he had over 40 kids in there. They worked the kids hard and the kids where respectful the whole Salina bunch acted in a way that was 1st class and would make anyone proud. I have been to Salina's wieght meet this coach puts on and once again it was nothing but a class act, as well as being done right. I have no ties to Salina and I have nothing against the place. But I feel Coach Butler deserved to have been treated with respect instead of people going behind his back and getting his job. Salina should have been proud of their kids and their coach, instead I think the board has shamed and tarnished Salina. With that said, I wish Salina good luck next season and hope they have a good one, there kids deserve it. Coach Butler, you are a class act and you should be proud of your hard work, whoever gets you next year will be getting a good person and a great coach and they will be lucky to have him.

Coach Box retired this year. Wanted to do some fishing from what I heard.
It was a rough year for Mangum trying to replace some pretty good players.
Next year looks to be a better year, Mangum has alot of guys coming back that saw ALOT of time on the field this year.
I was under the assumption that the job was pretty much gift wrapped from Coach Box's son.
The Board of Education has interviewed but taken no action. It seems like the goal for picking a coach is Feb. 1st.
Mangum's problem is lack of size and speed. You have kids who love to play and will play hard.

Well maybe it should've been handed to him, but even jobs that are basically handed to successors are opened to the public to make sure the administration takes care of the formalities (Equal Opportunity Employer...blah blah). Like I said earlier, everything I have is rumor, but I heard that if he would've applied, he would've been definately a front runner...but he didn't. Sometimes going back where you're from is not a peachy as is sounds. People that you know or knew when you played are still there and before you know it, you are coaching kids of people you went to school with. Then comes the...I scratched your back in H.S., now you scratch mine. Sometimes it's not worth the headache. Maybe he didn't want it? Who knows? All I know is that if he would've applied, he probably would have got it...but he didn't apply.

Well if that is the case, then that is just arrogance and he deserves to not have the job...just my opinion. Like I was told...if he would've applied like everyone else...all the other interviews would have just been a formality...

Haven't heard on Beggs, the only name I have heard at Moore is Scott Meyers from Woodward. Apparently coach Noles, who is still around at Moore, contacted him and wanted him to apply. As for El Reno, I know that Cobble met with El Reno officials for awhile on Tuesday, apparently he will make a decision by the end of the week. Last I heard was that the offer was out there for him, and it was up to him now.
Or maybe I hadn't heard the latest...This was in the Enid News this morning.

I do believe we are getting a new Supt., ours is no longer going to be with us, and we are getting at least one "pro" football board member, or that's how it looks right now. There were more voters @ the election yesterday than I can ever remember and the football guy was handily out front. So, it looks like the run-off in April will be a success.
I know that we are all behind him and the staff, but I don't know if any of this will make a difference now. I believe coach has been contacted about a couple of jobs, and possibly applied at a couple of places so we will see????

Your coach has been "contacted" about a couple jobs huh, just like last year when he was supposedly "contacted" about several jobs then as well - like the Blanchard job among others.
All of which makes me wonder.....if he is all the time being "contacted" about these jobs.....why isn't he actually "GETTING" any of them?
Hmmmmmm........

gofortwo,
Daryl is a great friend of mine and is one of the outstanding young coaches in the state of Oklahoma. He has done a tremendous job there at Panama and has built a great coaching staff in his 4 years there. He has poured his heart and soul into that football program and the only reason he has even interviewed for other jobs is due to the threat of being let-go due to jealousy throughout the school system.
I do know for a fact that he has been contacted by several schools the past couple of years, several of which he has turned down and a few others that he has been a finalist up against other great coaches. Even though he knows there is a possibility that he may be leaving Panama he hasn't "mass" applied for every open job in the state like some do. It is very important to him to be in a place that is a good fit for he and his family and one that will allow him to run a program the "right" way!
I have coached for quite some time now and I can honestly say that Daryl has the sharpest offensive mind that I have had the pleasure to be around. Sit down and talk X's & O's with him some time and find out for yourself. The school fortunate enough to end up with Daryl Williamson as their head coach next year, whether it be Panama or somewhere else, will be very blessed for their decision. He is a great man with a great family and can definitely coach the game of football. Good luck to you and your staff!

That testimonial is wonderful, not sure why you feel the need to say it however because no one has said a negative word about your man on here - including me.
All that was asked (and I might add I am STILL saying it) was how come he doesn't land all these jobs he's been "contacted" about?
As I understand this business - and I've been in it a while myself - it's fairly unusual for a coach to be contacted by another school when he is already under contract. Not saying it doesn't happen now and then, particularily through prominent "insiders", but that generally means that coach has an inside track on the job.....doesn't it?
I guess your guy has the incrediable fortune of being able to "turn down" more jobs in a 12 month period than most coaches would ever get a shot at in a career....
(must be nice)

Rick, thanks man.
Gofortwo, I can see your point. What is funny is that two jobs that have in fact contacted me are two in which I didn't even get the job!
It's funny now, but boy does it hurt to be the one left out. As you can imagine being a coach we are very competitive individuals and nobody likes to lose.
Around this time last year Richard Grady, the AD at Blanchard did in fact call me to see if I would be interested in interviewing for the Blanchard Head Coaching position. Went on the interview, and as we can see they hired a very good coach there (Jeff Craig) who has been a part of some very successful programs. While I don't know Coach Craig personnally I am very happy for him and wish he and the Blanchard Football program the best.
Now, it would be easy to sit back and say, well I didn't want that job, or I wouldn't have taken that job, but I can tell you that's not the case! It hurt like hades!! and truth is would I have taken that job or not, who knows, I didn't have that option. But, yes they did call me to interview, and believe me that was a flattering situation, one in which I am thankful for, because due to the process I was fortunate enought to meet several very quality people, including those who didn't pick me!:)
Another job I was contacted about hasn't even been recently, But one that was all too painful as well. Just before I came to Panama, I was contacted by The Woodlands HS, (Conroe, TX N. or Houston) regarding their Head Wrestling Coach (I was the Head Wrestling Coach @ B'Wood along with my Football Duties) Position. As you can see, I was not chosen for that one either.
Moral of the story: #1. I have learned invaluable lessons from these experiences mainly the fact that just because somebody calls you, obviously you are not the shoe in for the job:) !!! And as a young coach, which I obviously sitll am, it sure is an ego boost to feel wanted, and when you start thinking you got it, that bubble is burst, and you are sent back to reality.
#2 Many times schools will contact guys, just to get to know them, maybe they have heard about them, maybe they have mutual acquaintences, whatever the reason. There's nothing shady or underhanded going on, and it sure don't mean the coach in question has a job. #3 Just because a school or someone affiliated with a school contacts you really doesn't mean anything, kinda like dating and someone giving a mutual friend a number, don't mean they're going to get married!!
I think we would all be surprised to see how many coaches around get a call from time to time. Perfectly legal, and pretty common actually. If in fact I apply for a job or go after a job, I'll be the first one to tell ya if ya ask. I'm an open book. I'll also be the first one to tell you if I just wasn't good enought to get the job. Which has apparently happened.
I know it's hard to believe that we/us coaches are humans:D and we have families and wants and needs and goals in our professional lives. Believe it or not, we want what just about everybody else wants and that is for our wives and kids to be happy, make a living, and get by. I know that it is easy for people to lose sight of this due to the public nature of our profession, and because of this just about everything we do is scrutinized and picked over with a fine tooth comb. That's understandable, we do work with peoples children, so I want them to be concerned with us. We did CHOOSE to do this for a living.
So anyways, just fire away if you ever got any questions, I'm an open book brother. You'd be surprised how many times people fail to communicate and the truth about most of us coaches is lost somewhere.
Thanks again Rick. Love you guys, tell simms that although he has moved on to a better class of sweater vest wearing individuals, we still love him here in the sleeveless dip stain crowd!!!!
Wish you could have met Paige today!!! Did you tell Simms about her!!
gofortwo- Also please remember, as with anything hearsay is not always accurate, so don't believe everything you hear

EDMOND — Oklahoma Christian School has named Derek Turner as its new football coach. Turner has been an assistant coach for three years.
He follows Tracy Holland, recently named head coach for Central Oklahoma.
Turner was an All-State football player at Deer Creek and named 1981 Little All-City Lineman of the year. He then played at Baylor.

ummmmm...............ok......whatever you say big fella.
I have been in this game a awfully long time now and have a bunch of friends who are pretty well thought of as coaches, and they aren't getting too many "unsolicited" phone calls from other schools wanting them to stop by and interview for their jobs.......but hey - that probably means I'm just hanging around the wrong crowd!!

I don't understand your post???
I wouldn't say any of your friends are chumps. Do I know you? and where do you coach at?
If you don't think that people contact coaches regarding jobs, you are seriously misinformed. Just about every successful coach I have been around has had guys discuss jobs with them.
When Coach Weddell and those guys were at LM schools would call and offer staff members jobs over the phone because of the program they were in. Those guys were in a very special situation however.
When a school is wanting to win and truly put the time and resources towards winning, they are "buying" the program, not the coach. If nobody is wanting to get a hold of guys, it may say something about the program they are in.
Just because you are in a "contract" this means absolutely nothing. That in no way prevents you from being able to discuss employment elsewhere. It is not limited to football either. I know several very Successful basketball coaches who get looks all the time.
I don't know where you are going with your posts, but if you have a problem with me or I have done something to you I apologize for whatever that may be. But if that's not the case, then it seems like you are trying to be somewhat negative towards me, if so, you better get some facts. I'll be glad to supply you with 'em if you need 'em.

I agree Daryl, sounds to me like he is being negative towards you, must be someone you ran it up on back in the day! No, that would make him a coach and if he was a coach he wouldn't be on here being negative towards another coach on a "Head Coaching Job" thread. Maybe it was someone you "beaned" back in the day when you were on the hill, and he's looking for a little payback! But that would mean he used to be a player. Yeah, that must be it "he used to be a player"!!
Gofortwo, the original post you responded to gave you no reason to make disparaging remarks towards Daryl. I know most of the community there in Panama wants Daryl and his staff to stay there and continue to win ballgames and build a great program. That's the reason the "Razorback Faithful" get on here and post, to show their support. I'm sure he gets on this thread to see what is going on in the coaching carousel because of the situation he has been put in, and the last thing he needs to see is inappropriate comments directed at him.

I have no clue. It won't be one of the assistants unless they try to keep the DC who is young but very talented. My equipment manager who is also assistant AD, stange huh, is best friends with the previous coach, Bob Davis, who is retired. There is a rumor he would come and just coach. His son, Chad, who was at UCO may alsobe a possibility. Even his other son, Richard, who is now at Wewoka may be a candidate. Probably won't make a decision until April. Good hire for Porum.Spoke with Reade yesterday but congrats again.
On Coachesaid(yes I'm too cheap to pay) someone was wanting to know about the hire at Ada so I'll fill them in if they are on this site.
Matt was the QB at Davis on their 1990 squad that went 15-0 and won it all.Led them to a 11-3 season the year before and to the semis where they lost to Cascia Hall 20-7.I believe he was the QB at NE when they won the National Championship.Finished at ECU I believe. Was an Assistant at Carl Albert and has done a GREAT job at Marlow taking them to the finals in 2006.
His dad Joe was the HC at Davis from 1988-2000.They were State Champs in 95.Was also the DC there in 86 on that State Championship squad. They gave up a whopping 2 points the entire playoffs in 1986.

This man deserves a chance & other options need to be explored. If Commerce puts Mitch & his family on the street i will be ashamed to be a part of this community, if money & tenure are the real problem, i think an alternative plan can be put forth, if it's politics & small town busy bodies behind it, then shame on you! No, I am going to Ponca to be an assistant. I was just wondering. I thought he did a really good job and was just wondering if maybe he got another job.

Yeah, I invested in Uhaul. Yes it is my 4th job in 4 years. Hopefully this will work out for me. I am tired of moving.

Chris Vandersypen (sp?) was hired at Rush Springs.......don't know anything about him other than he has been at several metro area schools over the last few years.

Coach D, Got the Panama Job. I I'm pretty happy about that. He is a good guy.
Spring Football went pretty well. We got some little bity guys in places and we are replacing a ton of good players, but the kids are pretty strong and are working hard.
