FYI. Charles Cooper coached the Tahlequah Tigers 1980-1992 with a record of 93-56-0. My coach 82-84. Coach Cooper coached the Tigers more seasons than any other head coach since the Tigers began football in 1924. Incidentally, the Tigers first game was against Stigler which the Tigers lost by a score of 0-119 :jaw: (and I thougth the past two seasons were rough ones! yikes!)
Over the course of TT football history, they have won a total of 8 district championships....five of those eight came during the Cooper years. I would like to see the return of Charles Cooper to lend his experience and expertise in rebuilding the football program. Best of luck to whoever takes on the monumental task of piecing back together Tahlequah's football program and I for one extend my support.

Update: More than just a rumor. The decision will be announced next week. There are two coaches in consideration for the Head Coaching job at Tahlequah High School, Charles Cooper being one of them. There is also some talk that if Cooper accepts and moves back to THS, he will be bringing some of the coaches that previously assisted him while in Tahlequah. Personally, I think that would be awesome!

:soapbox: Perhaps winning just isn't for THS....I do however wish the best for whoever THS hires for the HC job. I was really hoping Coach Cooper would get it though.

Ok, ok,...I retract the above spewed frustration (see previous post) Tahlequah High School names Kenneth "Tuffy" Thornton as head football coach of the Tigers. Tuffy Thornton is a 1985 alumni of THS and 1990 NSU alumnist (and a heck of a great guy on top of that!) I'm enthused and delighted in Tahlequah Public School's choice. I must admit I was disappointed when Charles Cooper didn't get the job, but I think Tuffy Thornton can and will lead the Tigers back to prominence in 6A-4 football!
Tahlequah Taps Thornton as Head Football Coach
By Gregg Stilwell, Press Special Writer
TAHLEQUAH – Tahlequah Public Schools administrators will recommend to the Tahlequah I-35 Board of Education that Kenneth Thornton be the new head football coach of the Tigers.
“We were honored to gain the interest of so many fine men and coaches,” said Athletic Director Randy Underwood. “This was a very difficult decision and eight fine applicants were interviewed.”
Thornton comes to Tahlequah with 16 years experience as an assistant coach, with stops at Sapulpa, Broken Arrow, Tulsa East Central, Enid, Sperry and Stilwell. He was a part of a successful season at Sapulpa as offensive coordinator, including an appearance at the 6A state quarterfinals last season. Thornton has made eight other playoff appearances in his career, including a trip to the 6A semi-finals at Enid High School and 6A quarterfinals at Broken Arrow.
“Coach Thornton has enthusiasm, love of the game and commitment to the community,” said Underwood. “He is a fine man with outstanding character who connects with kids.”
Underwood wants Thornton to build on the level of participation in the football program.
“It is a difficult game it takes a great deal of intrinsic values and motivation. We have great, tough kids, and I know Coach Thornton will lead them to believe in their potential. He has the fire in his belly for Tahlequah football and he has a never say die, tenacious attitude to do whatever it takes to build a successful program,” said Underwood. “The community can depend on Coach Thornton to give his heart and soul to the Tahlequah High School football program.”
Thornton is a 1990 graduate of Northeastern State University and a 1985 graduate of Tahlequah High School.
