PROFILE: Kirk Fridrich

Fridrich replaced long-time football boss Bill Defee and went 28-16 with three playoff appearances for Stillwater High football.

An assistant at Tulsa Union for nine seasons, Fridrich takes over an Owasso program not unlike Stillwater High, going 7-4 in 2005 and losing in the first round of the 6A playoffs.

Players were told last Friday of his decision to leave and the initial “expected” reaction included why? Perhaps a 4-year old son and a wife, with family in Owasso, expecting the Fridrichs’ second child has something to do with it?

“Stillwater provided me with a great opportunity to grow as a coach and a person,” said Fridrich on Monday night. “A couple of seniors just wanted to know why this year? It’s tough when you invest so much time and develop a family bond with your players and the community.

“An opportunity presented itself and my family felt like it was something we needed to take advantage of.”

People change jobs every day. Coaches, when they aren’t forced to leave, are always questioned just a little bit more about it.

Owasso is considered the fastest growing school district in the state of Oklahoma. Within 10 years, many feel OHS could have 2,000 students per grade. The former coach of the Pioneers will need that as he goes from 6A-3 and the Union machine to 6A-4 and the Jenks Trojans.

Kirk Fridrich has been named as the new Owasso High School head football coach. He joins the Rams from Stillwater High School where he has coached the Pioneers the last 4 years. The Pioneers made it to the state playoffs three of those seasons. While at Stillwater he was named the 2004 District 6A-3 Coach of the Year.

Coach Fridrich also spent time as an assistant coach at Union, Metro Christian Academy, and Bishop Kelley High School. He graduated from Shawnee High School and is a member of the Shawnee Hall of Fame. A three-year starter for the University of Tulsa football team, he was named “FCA College Athlete of the Year” in 1991 and remains associated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He holds a Masters of Science degree from Oklahoma State University with a major in educational leadership, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tulsa in health, physical education and education.

Coach Fridrich and his wife, Tina, have a 4 year old son, Joshua, with another child on the way.
