Rodman plots 'dream' NBA return

Rodman was a controversial but popular figure in his UK games

Dennis Rodman said he wanted to make a comeback in the NBA after completing his three-game stint at Brighton Bears.
The 44-year-old, who helped Brighton beat London 103-84 in the British Basketball League on Wednesday said two NBA sides had offered him trials.

"My dream is to get back into the NBA on the back of these games - Portland and Toronto have offered me try-outs," said the former Chicago Bulls star.

London's Terrence McGee hit 32 points; Rodman grabbed four and nine rebounds.

Rodman, who also appeared on reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother while in the UK, returns to the US having earned a reputed £50,000 for his three games for Brighton.

The Bears have also found themselves at the centre of a row after infringing rules that say clubs can have a maximum of only three players requiring work permits.

"You've got one of the biggest names in basketball playing in your little league and you have to follow some dumb rules" Nick Nurse, Brighton Bears coach

They are expected to find out on Thursday what action will be taken against them for breaching the BBL work-permit regulations in the game at home to Guildford earlier this month.

Brighton failed to de-register one of their three work permit players when Rodman was added to the team for the Guildford game, which took them over the limit for non-national players.

Brighton coach Nick Nurse accused the BBL of being small-minded over the issue.

He said: "It's ridiculous. You've got one of the biggest names in basketball playing in your little league and you have to follow some dumb rules.

"People should be talking about what a great addition Dennis Rodman has been to the British League but instead we're having a row about work permits."

And after the side lost to league leaders Newcastle on Tuesday, Rodman went out on a high the following night.

Terrence McGee scored a game-high 32 points in the defeat of London Towers, with Rodman finishing with four points and nine rebounds.

The Bears edged each of the first three quarters by seven points apiece and Towers were unable to recover the deficit in the last 10 minutes.

Lynard Stewart led the scoring for the Towers with 32 points.

I remember watching Rodman from the sidelines when his college team played in "the pit" against my teamates from Northwestern at Alva. He was impressive as his team won that night. However, those youthful years have passed and so has his time. He hasn't a prayer to be successful in the NBA today with those old legs unless the refs let him get away with it like some others. However, if Jordan's knees couldn't do it, I doubt his can either. It would come down to him being a freak show on the side. .....but,.... now that I've said that, it might be a good fit for the NBA. I'm not crazy about the NBA of recent because it all seems predetermined. I despise everything about the pro game because super star status is way too forgiving. Walking is never called. Carrying the ball is never called. Super stars shoving their opponents into the first row seats is OK but when a touch foul occurs on them, they cry like babies. I'm afraid, the refs might give him a pass as they do so many other big name players that it would just be more of the same. But, what the heck,,, why not? That's what the NBA is all about. Hopefully the startup Hornets won't have to many big time players like that. For the moment, they seem to be winning without all the help.
