Can anyone stop Sequoyah Talequah from a repeat?
Area I
While second-ranked Millwood is a clear favorite to return to the state tournament, sixth-ranked Bethany took a slight edge over ninth-ranked Marietta for the other Area I favorite slot. It could be a sensational showdown in a regional final at Lexington, provided both take care of their first two opponents, with the winner moving just one win away from reaching state. A solid group of sleepers, including Comanche, Hobart and Plainview could also make some noise but would likely have to go through Millwood in regionals to get there.
Area II
A power-packed Area II lineup should make things very interesting in the rout to the state tournament. Third-ranked Alva and surging sixth-ranked Chouteau draw the favorite nods, but not by much. Alva has nemesis Chisholm in district and then could face a dangerous Fairview squad before seeing Perry or state veteran Newkirk in the region finals. The other regional features Chouteau, but 12th ranked Perkins is battle-tested against tough competition and could spring a surprise.
Area III
This could arguably be the most wide-open of the four areas with five teams ranked in the Top 13 of the current rankings. There's likely not much tougher regional than the one at Sperry, which will consist of three highly-ranked clubs. A potential regional opening contest between 10th ranked Verdigris and 11th Westville would be sensational with seventh-ranked Kansas awaiting the victor in the regional title tilt. On the other side of the bracket, eighth-ranked Adair leads the way but Kellyville, Morris and Prague all post major hurdles.
Area IV
Top-ranked Sequoyah Tahlequah is a heavy favorite to roll through Area IV and won't have to go more than about a 20-minute bus ride away for any playoff game until state. Co-favorite and fourth-ranked Bethel has a solid draw in regionals, although a meeting with Heavener, one of the top contenders, could be interesting in the region finale.
