Gerald Jones and Millwood are one of the favorites to win it all.
Area I
Clear favorites in second-ranked Millwood and fifth-ranked Jones but neither is bullet-proof. Millwood definitely is the team to beat, if healthy, and that's a big if with the fabulous Gerald Jones attempting to come back from a knee injury. The Falcons have loads of history on their side. Jones has been virtually unbeatable, with the exception of a January trip to Newcastle. Could be a very interesting meeting if both run the table to an area final at Mustang. One of the biggest challenges will come from Lindsay, which is in search of its seventh straight 20-win season. A veteran Tishomingo squad will also be looking to carry that experience the next step this season. Marietta has one of the top scorers in the state in Remington Willis and could surprise.
Area II
Fourth-ranked Cascia Hall is a heavy favorite in its playoff return to Class 3A and is expected to have any trouble until a possible regional final against Chandler, which would be a true road game. Pawhuska has been a bit up and down throughout the season but get the slight edge in a favorite role, but could have some trouble in a regional that includes a streaking Alva squad. Watch for Watonga, which should have a terrific battle with Alva in a regional opener.
Area III
It would be pretty tough to find an area as top-heavy as Area III, which is definitely loaded with plenty of contenders. Top-ranked Verdigris and undefeated and third-ranked Adair at the area favorites but both will get tested more than once before ever seeing each other in the area round. Verdigris must first get through a regional that includes 14th ranked Haskell while Adair could see seventh ranked and an 18-4 Morris squad in a sensational regional final, provided each can make through the first two rounds unscathed.
Area IV
Although sixth-ranked Sequoyah and eighth-ranked Spiro get the favorite labels, this could be the most wide-open of any of the areas. Don't be surprised by an upset or two. Sequoyah has the luxury of nearly every playoff game up to state in its own backyard, but will have to fight through a solid Vian squad in district and then a host of contenders, including ninth-ranked Keys in regionals. Spiro meanwhile could have its hands full with Valliant in the regional opener with 10th ranked Eufaula or up-and-coming Holdenville after that.
