Gore surges past Hulbert to win Vian tourney

VIAN - When the Lady Pirates get their bats going, watch out.

Hulbert learned that lesson on Friday afternoon as Gore rallied from a four-run deficit to post a 12-4 victory in the championship game of the Vic Harris Invitational softball tournament.

The Lady Pirates had gradually pulled even before the start of the fifth inning. Then, with two outs, they strung together seven hits in a row while erupting for seven runs and taking control of the title game.

"Hulbert played tough. They came up from the losers bracket and beat Keys and they had our number for a while," said Gore head coach Brandon Ellis. "What impresses me about our girls is that they can play from behind. We didn't get rattled, and we stayed disciplined. I'm really proud of them because they showed a lot of heart."

Hulbert rolled into the championship game after eliminating Keys and the Lady Riders kept their momentum going by taking a 1-0 on Tanda Beaver's RBI single in the top of the first inning. They added three more runs in the top of the second to make it 4-0.

Meaghan Cawhorn sparked Gore in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run over the fence in center field to pull the Lady Pirates within 4-2. They tied the game in the fourth inning as Kera Smith belted an RBI double and then scored on an RBI single by Chelsea Kizzia.

Freshman outfielder Dena Qualls kept the game tied in the top of the fifth when she made an over-the-shoulder catch at the fence to rob Hulbert of a possible home run.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Qualls ignited the Lady Pirates' big inning with an RBI double that drove in big sister Erin Qualls from first base. Caitlin Cawhorn followed with an RBI double and Kendra Smith singled in another run to make it 7-4. After Kera Smith hit her third double of the afternoon, Meaghan Cawhorn ripped a two-run triple to keep the rally going. Kizzia added an RBI single and Macy Moseley hit an RBI double to make it 11-4.

Any hopes of a Hulbert comeback were squashed in the top of the sixth inning as the Lady Pirates turned an unconventional double play. Kizzia hustled to catch a pop-fly as it dropped out of the glove of a teammate and first baseman Mosely tagged Hulbert's P.J. Farmer off the bag.

Holly Cordray brought the run rule into effect in the bottom of the sixth. The sophomore pitcher led off with a single, moved to second when Erin Qualls walked and took third on Dena Qualls' sacrifice fly. Cordray was driven in by Caitlin Cawhorn to put Gore up by eight runs.

The victory was the second of the day for Gore and it pushed the Class 4A fourth-ranked Lady Pirates' record to 17-0.

"It's building confidence, but there's also a lot of pressure because we have a target on our back," said Ellis. "The girls want to go undefeated and I understand that, but I've told them it's almost impossible to do that in slowpitch softball."

In Friday's 12-2 win over Keys, Moseley and Kera Smith both batted 3-for-3, while Dena Qualls, Meaghan Cawhorn and Kizzia all had two hits apiece. Caitlin Cawhorn drove in four runs and hit her third homer of the season in the third inning.

On Thursday, Gore totalled 20 hits while beating Central 14-1. The Qualls sisters both had three hits, as did Caitlin Cawhorn, who had a three-run homer. Dena Qualls hit her third home run of the year and Kera Smith bashed her sixth. Moseley was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

In their opening game on Thursday, the Lady Pirates run-ruled Braggs 19-0 in two and a half innings. Erin Qualls batted 3-for-3 with four RBIs and her second home run of the season. Dena Qualls was 3-for-3 with a home run and a triple and Caitlin Cawhorn was 2-for-2 with a homer. Kendra Smith went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and her second home run. Kera Smith doubled twice and Lexy Ward was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

Cordray was the winning pitcher in all four of Gore's games at the Vian tournament.

Yes the last one makes it Gore's first lost of the season. Which they extend their record to 21-1 on the season. They have to bounce back today though. They have #8 6A Jenks then #3 5A Roland.

Our poor girls froze they tails off last night for their uniforms consist of shorts. Had a strong north wind and then it starts to rain with a snow mix. Just hope not to many of them get sick.

Good Luck Ladys.

What happened to the Mighty Lady Pirates? Seen where they were beaten out of Regionals yesterday. Must of had the Muskogee Phoenix jinx put on them.
