Oil Bowl basketball games dropped;
Coaches named for football game

Times Record News
On a day when the Oil Bowl began preparations for its 69th football game, basketball was scratched from the Maskat Shrine Temple’s annual summer event.
Oil Bowl chairman Ronnie Awtry said basketball had been losing money for the charity event which benefits crippled children charities in Texas and Oklahoma.
Also, Don Snodgrass — who has helped coordinate the hoops portion of the Oil Bowl for the past 10 years — stepped down after last year’s games, frustrated over not being able to attract the top players in the two states.
College coaches now get some recruits in summer school to get them eligible to play their freshman year, and the summer schools are a conflict with the June date of the Oil Bowl.
Hoops had been a part of the Oil Bowl for the last 10 years. It started with only a boys game in 1996, but after two years, a girls game was added.
The football game will be played June 17 at Memorial Stadium with the Texas all-stars trying to avenge the 38-7 whipping Oklahoma put on the Lone Star State last year. Texas leads the all-time series 41-18-1.
Aledo’s Tim Buchanan, the coach who eliminated Rider from the Class 4A playoffs the past two years, will be on the Texas Oil Bowl coaching staff, along with Shawn Pratt of McKinney North and Hal Wasson of Keller Fossil Ridge.
Pratt will be the head coach.
Pat McGrew of Bixby will be the head coach and offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Oil Bowl team.
Mike Wilson of Purcell will be his special-teams coordinator, and Max Plunk, an assistant coach from Lawton MacArthur, will serve as his defensive coordinator.
