CHECOTAH — If the Checotah boys basketball team is to make a run in the playoffs this season, the Wildcats are likely to do it with defense.
Coach Shedrick Jones’ team used their intensity and quickness to hold off the Oktaha Tigers 45-42 in the final regular season game for both teams Tuesday night at a noisy Truman Dixon Fieldhouse.
“I’m tickled to death with the effort by our kids,” Jones said.
Checotah was able to hold Oktaha to 19 points in the first half and led by 11 points as the teams at halftime.
The Tigers, now 17-6 for the season and ranked No. 7 in the Coachesaid.com Class 2A poll this week, were able to tie the game at 33-33 on Justin Smith’s 3-point shot with 7:18 left in the game. Later, Oktaha tied the game at 39 on Drew Blankenship’s rebound with 1:23 remaining.
Checotah (14-8) got a three-point play from Cody Rock to take a 42-39 lead, and the Wildcats squeezed out the victory.
“They’re really quick on defense,” Oktaha coach Jim Glover said. “They’ve beaten Eufaula, Morris and Henryetta. Beating Eufaula is saying something because they’re a quality 3A team.”
Jon Carlis, one of five seniors honored on Senior Night, led the Wildcats with a game-high 18 points.
David Travis led the Tigers with 13 points. His team outscored Checotah 11-3 in the third period as the Wildcats clung to a 33-30 lead going into the final eight minutes of the contest.
Next is districts for both teams. The Oktaha teams host Gore Saturday in Class 2A, while Checotah hosts Sallisaw in Class 4A on Friday. Both girls games start at 6:30 p.m. and the boys games follow at 8 p.m.
