Pioneers upset No. 3 Jenks on Senior Night
By Ryan Steele, Sports Writer
The Stillwater Pioneers ended their regular-season schedule with a bang as they upset No. 3 Jenks, 48-44, Tuesday night at SHS Fieldhouse.
It was also the final home game for Michael Davis’ seniors.
“It’s always emotional on that last night at home,” Davis said. “You spend a lot of time with these kids over the years, and I was happy for those particular seniors to go out in the style they did against a quality team.”
Despite having 21 turnovers at the end of the third quarter, SHS only trailed by two, 31-29, going into the last eight minutes.
A pair of free throws by senior Seth Rogers gave the Pioneers (9-12) their first lead of the second half at 43-42 with 1:59 left in the game. SHS completed 12-of-14 free throws (85.7 percent) to earn the victory against the Trojans (17-4).
“Hopefully we’re starting to hit our stride,” Davis said. “We’ve been in enough close games now and I think our guys know how to finish them out, so I hope that problem’s over with.”
Rogers led the Pioneers in scoring with 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior R.J. Murray finished with 12 points and another senior, Taylor Field, contributed eight.
Davis said he’s happy with the way his seniors came through Tuesday.
“Our seniors set a lot of goals (this year) and some of them didn’t happen — like win homecoming and not lose any games at home,” Davis said. “But the one thing they did get accomplished was that they went out in style (at home).”
Before the contest officially started, SHS held a 2-0 lead. JHS was called for a technical foul for dunking during the pregame warmups and the Pioneers were awarded two free throws — Field completed both.
