OKLAHOMA CITY Much like Keiton Page's 41-point performance in Friday's Class 2A semifinals, Saturday's championship game between Wewoka and Pawnee will be talked about for awhile.

Momentum swings donít begin to tell the story of the first game played on championship Saturday inside State Fair Arena.

In the end it was the Black Bears who prevailed, beating Wewoka, 66-65, to claim the program's first gold ball.

"I guess it's time for golf now," joked Pawnee junior Clay Bowen, who was also part of the Black Bears' state champion in football. "Both seasons were awesome. We just have a ton of great athletes right now."

"Baseball is next," said senior Casey Bruns, the quarterback of the 15-0 football squad. "Two down and one to go for me. We have amazing athletes right now and the coaches are great. We've also got some younger guys stepping up at all the right times."

Only twice before Saturday had a high school program in Oklahoma won both the football and boys basketball championship in the same year ; Ardmore (1992-93) and John Marshall (1995-96). It looked like the third time would be wrapped up early as Pawnee jumped out to an 11-3 advantage thanks to an aggressive zone defense that forced five early turnovers.

Momentum swing No. 1 came from Wewoka.

The Tigers (23-6) took a timeout and responded with a 14-0 run to take a 17-11 advantage. WHS junior sharpshooter Mitchell Tilley, who finished with 28 points, would score seven points during the spurt.

But PHS got some help from Manny Abington and Trey Stewart off the bench, putting together a small run to end the first down 17-16.

Abington, a sophomore, scored six second quarter points and Stewart added a big block as the Bears took a 27-22 lead.

Again WHS responded, getting solid work on the boards. WHS outrebounded Pawnee 18-10 in the first half from 6-3 BJ Walls, who had six points during a run that saw Wewoka tie the game.

A Virgil Tilley three would send the game to halftime tied at 33.

Twelve of PHS's first half points came from the foul line and the charity stripe would play a major role in the second half.

The see-saw affair continued in the third quarter as Wewoka jumped out to a 43-39 lead on a John Patton trey. It was Pawnee's turn to respond as a bucket and a pair of free throws by Bowen tied the game with 2:49 left in the third.

But you guessed it again Wewoka fought back, getting a long three from Mitchell Tilley for a 48-43 margin at the one minute mark.

Page dropped in a three in the final seconds of the third to cut the deficit to two with eight minutes to play.

"It's probably one of the best games I've ever played in," said Page. "Wewoka is a good team and they gave it everything they had. We just had a little more."

To start the fourth, Abington converted a big bucket and Bruns took a steal the length of the court for a layup and a 50-48 lead. The senior knocked down a free throw for a three-point play and PHS was up four after an 8-0 run.

Wewoka finished? No way.

A Mitchell Tilley offensive board and putback would give the Tigers a 54-51 lead.

Ballgame right?

A Page jumper and a breakaway after a steal made it 55-54 in Pawnee's favor.

All 5-foot-11 of Mitchell Tilley, in amongst the trees, grabbed an offensive rebound and his free throw after a foul gave WHS a 57-55 lead.

And like two heavyweight boxers in the 15th and final round, Page delivered the final blow when his rainbow three put the Bears up 58-57 with 2:13 to play.

A WHS turnover and it was 60-57 after a Bruns bucket. Page and Bruns would convert 4-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch as the lead grew to 64-59.

One final Wewoka gasp included a pair of threes, but it was too little too late.

"This is about the kids ... all the work theyíve put in," said Pawnee first-year coach David Page, who also claimed gold balls at Yale in 1999 and 2000. "They really became a team and accepted Keiton and myself into this program. (Senior) Justin Thompson gave up a lot for this team. He's been the main scorer the last couple of years, but this year he took on a different role. He made everybody better around him."

Keiton Page's first state tournament was nothing less than phenomenal. After a 13-point outing in a three-point win over Crescent, Page responded with 41 against Latta and 29 in the title game. Saturday he was 8-of-8 from the line as Pawnee knocked down 21-of-23. Eight of Thompson's 10 points came from the line.

Senior Bobby Adson scored eight points, six coming in the third quarter. Abington added eight off the bench. All seven of Brunsí points came in the final period.

"The thing about Pawnee is that everybody gives it everthing they have," Thompson said. "When you do, and you have the type of athletes we have, you win gold balls. I've waited four years for this and it feels great."

Added Adson, "It's something you dream about."

WHS launched 31 three-pointers and went to the foul line just three times.

I was wondering about Pioneer PV. Weren't they in 2A last year and Didn't they make some noise in the post season tournament? As long as we don't stub our toe at home on Thursday, the Dusters will likely meet them in the Regional Championship this Saturday in Cherokee.

Pioneer boys put 17-game winning streak on line

Staff reports

Pioneer’s boys will put their 17-game winning streak on the line tonight when they visit defending state champion Frontier in the second half of a 6:30 p.m. girls-boys basketball doubleheader.

Frontier is ranked No. 1 in Class A with a 19-4 record. Pioneer, 19-2, is ranked No. 4. Both teams begin playoff action Saturday.

J.J. Fournier had 16 points in last year’s game against Frontier, a one-point loss, while Jacob Hundley had 12. Phillip Easterly (15.9) and Seth Stambaugh (15.85) lead the Pioneer attack.

Frontier’s girls, also the defending state champion, are 19-4, including a 48-37 loss to Newkirk Tuesday. Frontier, ranked No. 1 in Class A, is led by University of Oklahoma signee Jenna Plumley, who had 48 points in a 98-69 rout of Chisholm Saturday.

It is one of the nicest gyms I've ever seen... high school or otherwise. One thing that doesn't come across in those pics is the awesome domed ceiling supported by massively beautiful wooden beams. It is absolutely incredible.

Brent, show the dome!

Oh, sure... However, the thread was originally about 2A basketball and it just kind of morphed into discussion of the Duster Dome. I'll just leave it here.

Turbo and Dusterdad,
Just wanted to let you guys know I will be following the Dusters throughout the BB playoffs, good luck and hope you make it to state. By the way guys, just a little FYI, I was born in the panhandle and it will always hold a soft soft in my heart. It is hard for anyone not from the panhandle to appreciate the beauty of it.
