Enid High School wide receiver John Baudendistel announced in late January his football days were over. He said he would enroll at Oklahoma State. But that has changed.
Baudendistel signed a letter of intent Monday to play at Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Enid football team and coaching staff joined Baudendistel at a signing ceremony at Honigsberg Fieldhouse.
“I went there on a visit, they offered and I accepted,” said Baudendistel. “Over the last couple of weeks, I realized how much I wanted to keep playing.”
Last season for the Plainsmen, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound Baudendistel grabbed 41 passes for 674 yards (16.4 yards per catch) and five touchdowns.
He finished four catches short of the single-season school record for catches in a season. He finished his EHS career with 1,002 yards receiving. Only five other receivers in school history have done that.
Baudendistel will be joining two Enid players on the Rangers’ roster. Tyler Grey will be a redshirt sophomore defensive back, and Tyler Lea will be a sophomore offensive lineman. Baudendistel’s signing is the second this winter for Enid. In early February, linebacker Jamarr Perry signed with Southwestern Oklahoma State. Enid coach Tom Cobble said Enid defensive back Marques Odom also is being recruited by the Bulldogs.
“Sometimes the recruiting process takes longer than the players think,” said Cobble. “It can be frustrating and tedious. But if you are a pretty good player at the Class 6A level you probably will have a chance to play somewhere.”
Cobble said having players continue their careers at the college level can be an inspiration for younger players in the program.
“They know what those guys accomplished,” said Cobble. “They can see that if you work hard you can go on to the next level.”
Northwestern finished 4-5 last season in Fred Slaughter’s first season as head coach. The Rangers lost four games by six points or fewer, including a one-point, double-overtime loss at Upper Iowa University.
