Stonewall girls and Stratford, Allen boys advance in winner’s bracket

STONEWALL — Stratford’s 13th-ranked Bulldogs lost three battles but managed to win the war — and their district championship — with a dominant fourth quarter in a 62-52 victory over host Stonewall.

In the girls’ contest, Felicia Logsdon scored 26 points, and Stonewall’s fifth-ranked Lady Longhorns improved to 24-1 on the season with an impressive 76-27 victory.

Class A district action at Allen saw Corby King score 18 points to lead three Allen players in double figures as the Mustangs beat Stuart, 50-36, but the Allen girls were outscored, 19-10, in the fourth quarter and fell, 46-42, to Indianola.

The Lady Longhorns raced to a 46-13 halftime lead and coasted to the easy victory as Logsdon and junior center Rena Serpa combined for 44 points. Kristie Byrd added 10 points off the bench for Stonewall, which will host Bray-Doyle in a regional winner’s bracket contest at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

“This was a good win and gave a lot of our kids the chance to play,” second-year Stonewall coach Christie Jennings said after watching her club post its 10th straight win since Christmas. “Bray-Doyle is probably down a little this year, but they still have a good club. They’re pretty solid.”

The Lady Mustangs carried a 32-29 lead into the final period but couldn’t keep pace late and will now face an eighth-ranked New Lima club (upset, 65-64, by Weleetka Saturday to fall to 23-3 on the year) in one of the state’s most attractive loser’s bracket contests at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We didn’t play very well — we missed a lot of easy shots, and that came back to haunt us,” Allen coach Greg Mills said. “It was a tight ball game with about two minutes to go, but they hit a big three-pointer and that hurt. We’ve got another tough one coming up Thursday against New Lima. We’ll have to play well to move on.”
