Heart facts
In honor of Valentine's Day (and American Heart Month), here are a few facts from "The Odd Body" about the overworked muscle we call the heart.
The human heart beats about 70 times a minute. The shrew's heart beats 600 times a minute, the hummingbird's 1,300 times a minute and the blue whale's 10 times a minute.
The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 feet.
If laid out in a straight line, the average person's circulatory system would be nearly 60,000 miles long - enough to circle the Earth 2½ times.
To allow room for the heart, the left lung is smaller than the right lung.
A heart will thump about 43 million times a year and about 3 billion times in a lifetime.
