The new head football coach at Newkirk High School is a familiar face to the Tiger football family. Pending approval of the Board of Education at its regular meeting on Monday, February 6, Barrett Shupe has been selected by Newkirk Public Schools administrators to take the reins of the NHS football program and fill the head-coaching post vacated by Curtis Layton last November.
Superintendent of the Newkirk Public School System Carl Barnes and NHS Principal Dwight Winburn were responsible for overseeing the hiring process that included 19 applicants and several more inquiries. Five coaches were granted interviews, and Barnes stressed that Shupe shined, adding, "Coach Shupe is just full of energy. He's enthusiastic. I know the young man, and he's the type of person you want to surround yourself with. He seemed very organized through the interview process. He not only answered the questions correctly, but he asked the correct questions, too. He wants to do what it takes to make the kids successful and to better our program."
Like his predecessor, Shupe is a former Tiger athlete. The 25-year-old graduated with the NHS Class of 1999 then continued his education at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa and completed his bachelor's degree at Oklahoma State University in the spring of 2004. He's gained coaching experience as an assistant under Kenny Young at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City during the 2004-05 school year and under former NHS Head Football Coach Sonny Schovanec at Oologah-Talala Public Schools this present year. Now, Shupe is upbeat about returning to coach at his alma-mater.
Shupe said the more he talked to Barnes and Winburn the better and more confident he felt about his decision to pursue the position. "I feel like it's a good fit for me and my family," he proclaimed. "Since the day I graduated high school, I started preparing to become a head coach. I helped Coach Schovanec with a padded camp at Newkirk (that summer), I worked as a graduate assistant during college, and (since graduating from college) I've worked for two of what I think are the best coaches in the state (Young at McGuinness and Schovanec at Oologah)."
As a player, the savvy quarterback led the Tigers to three playoff appearances capped by a Class 2A State semifinal appearance his senior season in the fall of 1998. In his first head-coaching post, he will usher the move back from Class A to 2A next fall for competition inside 2A-1, an alignment that also includes Alva, Chisholm, Fairview, Hennessey, Perkins-Tryon, Perry, and Watonga. On the 2006 non-District slate for Newkirk's boys are games against Crescent, Tonkawa, and Drumright.
